An arguable point is whether film can be categorized as old or new, but when it comes to cinema in Indonesia, we're not talking about a new medium. Public screenings started around 1912 and the first movie theater was built in 1920. It's only logical that throughout the 20th century, Indonesian cinematography had progressed and then adapted to meet the needs of modern society. What most people think of when they hear 'old school,' though, is movies from the 1980s; movies with certain characteristics like anamorphic lenses, light filters and analog soundtracks. "Good Old Fashioned Love" (1980), "Arisan!" (1981), "Sang Penari" (1986) are all considered classics. The Golden Age is a retrospective of these kinds of movies. The event was organized by a group of film enthusiasts who worked closely with the Directorate of Cinema. The movies were selected based on popularity, artistic merit and box office performance. Among the fifty movies that made over IDR 300 million (US$10,000) during their original runs, there are classics like "Dendam Kuntilanak" (1982), "Si Doel Anak Betawi" (1982) and "Burung Hong Beau Di Bontang" (1985). Some of these films were invited to international festivals like Berlin International Film Festival, Moscow International Film Festival and Locarno International Film Festival. This year's event was held at VIVA, COEX Mall, in Seoul. According to the organizers, the Golden Age of Indonesian Cinema is expected to be a festival like no other. The event featured live performances and film screenings and gave viewers the chance to watch the movies and walk around at the same time. Tickets cost US$15 or IDR400,500 for a day pass; US$130 or IDR625,000 for VIP tickets; and US$110 or IDR450,000 for students' tickets.
